Sulphur powder is an important raw material in the chemical industry. It is used to manufacture rubber and tires, pharmaceutical compounds, and agrochemicals. Petroleum refineries and gas processing plants extract H2S when making clean fuels and use it as a feedstock to produce sulphur and water.
Rubber is the main raw material used in the manufacturing of tires, and both natural & synthetic rubber is used. In rubber molecules, the cross-linking between the chains is much less. This leads to the softness of the rubber. To make the rubber hard, it is treated with sulphur, & this process is known as vulcanization. When sulphur reacts with the natural rubber then it increases the cross-linking between the molecules in the rubber. It also forms many sulphide bonds. Due to the formation of many new cross-linking and many sulphide bonds the natural rubber becomes hard. This vulcanized rubber has better elasticity at low as well as at high temperatures. It also neither becomes soft nor brittle.
Pure sulfur is a tasteless, odorless, brittle solid that is pale yellow, a poor conductor of electricity, and insoluble in water. It reacts with all metals except gold and platinum, forming sulfides; it also forms compounds with several nonmetallic elements.
Insoluble sulphur is an important rubber additive. The reason the focus is on the use of INSOLUBLE sulfur is that common soluble sulphur tends to bloom i.e., deposition of sulphur inside or at the surface of the rubber. Insoluble sulphur improves product quality, wearability, and resistance to both fatigue and aging. Insoluble sulphur is mainly used as a vulcanization accelerator and agent in the rubber industry. It allows for more solid adhesion of the rubber, prevents the rubber from breaking apart, and improves resistance to heat and tire wear, and is, therefore, an essential raw material in tire production. The high quality of rubber products can be improved and the defects of ordinary sulfur is made up.
